With due pride, we are happy to announce that a new group of talents has been selected as the future leaders in de cardiovascular arena for the second edition of the DCVA Leadership Program. The second edition of the DCVA Leadership Program will officially start in June 2021.
Out of 46 applicants 15 talents were selected by reviewers and the selection committee. The talents will work on five challenging and complex topics the DCVA partners encounter; ‘Responsible, valuable cardiovascular science and innovation’, ‘Using data from wearables for patient care’, ‘Hartenbank: donor recruitment and donor retention’, ‘Cardiac rehabilitation’ and ‘Tailor-made regulations for research’. Each topic will be assigned to the talents, who will work in groups of three on the topic of their preference during the 2-year program.
The 15 selected talents represent different expertises within the cardiovascular field; fundamental researchers, clinicians, engineers, data analysts, and patients.
Kak Khee Yeung
Cardiologist in training and postdoc researcher in Maastricht University Medical Center. After her PhD 2015, she continued her research as a postdoc with a joined appointment at the department of Gynecology and Cardiology aiming at reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease in women by using new concepts on the crossroad of cardiology and gynecology.
Cardiologist and a translational scientist who, previous to his current appointment, completed a PhD program at the University of Groningen and a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California San Diego, USA. He is registered as a clinical pharmacologist and subspecializes in heart failure and cardiac MRI.
Clinical Epidemiologist and Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Epidemiology and the Dept. of Radiology & Nuclear Medicine of Erasmus MC. Additionally, he holds positions as lecturer and visiting scientist at the Dept. of Clinical Epidemiology of Harvard School of Public Health, and as guest-professor at the Dept. of Cardiovascular Sciences of KU Leuven.
Heart failure cardiologist and clinical epidemiologist, department of Cardiology Erasmus MC, Rotterdam. Clinical doctor across the whole field of heart failure spectrum including advanced HF. Focus on large scale patient data and registries, linkage of data with other resources (patient, hospitals, pharmacy), e-health and telemonitoring including CardioMEMS remote monitoring, and worsening heart failure influencing the patient journey with heart failure.
Assistant professor at the University of Twente, affiliated with the Department of Mathematics and the Technical Medical Centre. He obtained his PhD in 2017 at Utrecht University (UMC Utrecht) with a thesis entitled Machine learning based analysis of cardiovascular images and was a postdoc at UMC Utrecht and Amsterdam UMC, Jelmer's research interest is in novel machine learning techniques for cardiovascular medical image analysis. He is involved in several research projects, including an NWO VENI grant that allows him to develop machine learning methods to model the progression of abdominal aortic aneurysms.
Stroke neurologist from Amsterdam University Medical Centers, the Netherlands. He attained his PhD in 2014 at the University of Amsterdam and completed a post-doctorate research fellowship at the University of Toronto from 2014-2015. As a staff neurologist at Amsterdam UMC, he combines clinical work with academic research. His research focuses are diagnosis and treatment of acute ischemic stroke, and cerebral venous thrombosis.
Professor of cardiovascular pathophysiology, Cardiovascular research Institute Maastricht (CARIM), Maastricht University; Honorary scientist Edinburgh University, Treasurer European vascular Biology organization (EVBO). Basic and translational scientist focussing on vascular dysfunction related to ageing and atherosclerosis, and their underlying molecular regulators.
Kak Khee Yeung
Vascular surgeon and Principal Investigator, Department of Surgery, subdivision Vascular Surgery at Amsterdam University Medical Centres, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Clinical area of interest: advanced endovascular treatment of complex aortic disease and peripheral arterial diseases. Research focus: development of personalised treatment for aortic aneurysms and dissections by performing translational research with a multidisciplinary approach.
Senior analyst, Netherlands Heart Registration (NHR), Eindhoven. Technical physician and science communicator with a focus on IT, data registration and data analysis to improve outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease.
Margot van der Salm- Ravensbergen
Nurse practitioner at Hadoks and the HagaZiekenhuis in The Hague. Focus on connecting projects in the field of cardiovascular disease from both primary and secondary care in The Hague. Areas of attention are the transfer of knowledge between the fields and making regional transmural agreements. Also working at the heart failure clinic.

In his clinical work and research, he focuses on blood coagulation that is split into Thrombosis (mainly venous thromboembolism and antithrombotic therapy) and Haemostasis (haemophilia and associated, mainly inherited, bleeding disorders).
Heart transplant recipient (2015) and molecular cell biologist from CARIM's department of Biochemistry at Maastricht University, with an affiliation at Institut für Molekulare Herz-Kreislauf-Forschung (IMCAR) at the University hospital RWTH Aachen. Investigating mechanosensing-and responses at cellular and molecular level of iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes in health and disease. His aim is to unravel signaling pathways which are responsible for cardiac diseases.
Assistant professor, department of Internal Medicine, Radboud university medical center, Nijmegen. Basic scientist working at a clinical department, studying the field of trained innate immunity in human atherosclerosis from bed to bench.
Cardiologist, working in the GHZ Hospital in Gouda with a focus on heart failure. As a clinical epidemiologist, he is also appointed in the UMC Utrecht as assistant professor focusing his research on heart failure in the general population, making use of big data such as electronic medical records and/or heart failure registries.
Vascular neurologist and an associate professor at the department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU). Both in her clinical work and her research she focuses on intracranial aneurysms and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. The overall aim of her research is to identify the patients who are at high risk of developing aneurysms and a subsequent aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Her research has a strong translational view in which she combines genetics, epidemiology and imaging of intracranial aneurysms.
