Double Dose - Jiayi Pei

Jiayi Pei is a junior post-doc in the group of Magdalena Harakalova/Frank van Steenbeek and Folkert W Asselbergs from the Department of Cardiology, UMC Utrecht.

During her PhD at Regenerative Medicinie Utrecht, UMC Utrecht, she focused on heart failure due to external factors (such as kidney disease and hormonal change) and/or known heart disease-causing genetic mutations. By employing multiple high-throughput sequencing methods, such as ChIP-seq and RNA-seq, she studied the biological changes in patient hearts when compared to non-failing control hearts. By integrating these multi-omics data sets, she identified key candidates and their regulated biological networks that could contribute to the disease progression and serve as new pharmacological targets. Now she continues her studies in inherited cardiomyopathies and investigates the allelic imbalance in hypertrophic cardiomyopathies using both cardiac tissues and induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes, which allows her to bring what she learned in HCM at the bulk level to the single-cell and even single-nucleus levels.
