On May 22nd, a diverse group of experts gathered in Utrecht to kick off a new DCVA projectgroup focused on increasing the use of postmortem diagnostics in cases of sudden, unexpected, and unexplained death among young adults aged 18 to 45.
The multidisciplinary DCVA project group, initiated by the Dutch Society for Clinical Genetics (VKGN), aims to break through current barriers that hinder the wider adoption of postmortem investigations. These diagnostics play a vital role in identifying the cause of death, especially when hereditary cardiovascular diseases are involved. Crucially, they allow for early detection and preventive care for surviving family members who may be at risk — potentially saving lives and reducing cardiovascular mortality, particularly among the young.
The project group has outlined a dual mission:
Improve structural reimbursement for postmortem diagnostics.
Raise awareness and change perceptions among both healthcare providers and the general public
The group will reconvene in autumn (September/October) to continue its work. The initiative welcomes all relevant stakeholders and will continue to involve experts from across the healthcare and research landscape. do you want to join? Contact info@dcvalliance.nl
